Cell Phones and Privacy 3B
A while ago my mom had a prepaid phone because she never used it that much much, but wanted to have something just in case of emergencies. Also I know that my cousin has one today because he cannot afford a monthly payment, but still wants to be able to have a cell phone. I find it wrong for the government to try and ban these prepaid phones just because they can't track everything that your doing. I think that they provide a legitimate way for people who cannot afford expensive iPhones or Droids to still be able to communicate when on the go. Further more even if the government was not to ban them, but require that you register your phone so that way you could be tracked, I still would not support that. Where does our privacy begin and end? Why would we be ok with this? I hate how the government insists on always finding more ways to get information about us; where we go, what we do, who we talk to, what we say to each other. I just feel that it is not necessary as if the amount of crime is going to drop because criminals will not be able to communicate on a phone without being tracked. Criminals being able to talk to one another freely is a risk of not having to register your prepaid phones, but this is how it has been all along and the world has not ended. Also I definitely do not think that the benefit of stopping a few bad people would outweigh the hassle of every person looking to get an quick and easy phone, having to register it. I would not support having to register prepaid phones nor do i think they should be banned.

I would not be in favor of the government banning pre-paid cell phones either. As you stated their are many useful legitimate reasons to use them. I would not be opposed to making them be registered however. I do like your picture on your blog. That phone reminds me of how un-private phones originally were when all calls were monitored by phone operators!
ReplyDeleteI partially disagree with your post. I do not think a ban on prepaid cellphones is a good idea however every other carrier has gps tracking in the phones. I do not think registering for a prepaid phone is a bad idea and don't think it would concern many people unless they had a reason and were using the phone for illegal purposes.
